Meals Policy
ExpectationsMeals Policy
The meal structure, entitlement, and expectations attached to volunteer meals.
In This Lesson
- What benefit is included
- What volunteers are expected to do
- How meals should stay organized and fair
Volunteer Meals Policy
ONDA provides volunteers with three meals per day as part of the volunteer program. This is one of the standard benefits included in both current volunteer agreements, alongside accommodation and weekly laundry. The meal policy is meant to keep things organized, fair, and easy for both volunteers and the kitchen team.
Purpose
This lesson explains how volunteer meals work, what volunteers are entitled to, and what is expected from them when ordering or collecting food.
Meal benefit
All volunteers receive:
- 3 meal per day
- complimentary laundry once per week
- housing as part of the volunteer arrangement
This lesson only covers the meal portion of that benefit.
General meal standard
Volunteer meals are provided as part of a shared operational system. Volunteers are expected to follow the process set by ONDA so the kitchen team can plan properly and avoid waste.
General expectations
- Follow the meal sign-up process
- Respect kitchen deadlines and pickup windows
- Clearly communicate dietary needs when relevant
- Do not assume a meal will be prepared if you did not follow the process
- Be respectful of the kitchen team and the system in place
Sign-up and ordering
The original exhibit language states that volunteers must sign up in advance for their meal and make their choice from the daily staff menu. It also says that vegetarian volunteers should mark that clearly on the sign-up form.
Meal sign-up rules
- Volunteers must sign up for their meals in advance
- Meal selection must be made from the available daily staff meal options
- Volunteers who need a vegetarian option must indicate that clearly when signing up
Pickup and timing
The older exhibit language says meals must be picked up during the scheduled meal window and that meals may be forfeited if they are not collected on time.
Timing expectations
- Pick up your meal during the assigned time window
- Do not expect the kitchen to remake or hold meals indefinitely
- If you miss the pickup window, the meal may be forfeited
Workday and off-day expectations
The exhibit language also distinguishes between meals on working days and meals on non-working days. It states that on workdays, volunteers are entitled to one meal and one free drink, and that on non-workdays, the volunteer is still entitled to one meal but not the drink benefit.
Current standard
| Day type | Included |
| Workday | 3 meals |
| Off day | 3 meals |
Legacy agreement note
The current agreements also mention:
- no drink included on off days
If that drink policy is still current, it should either remain in this lesson or be moved into a separate Volunteer Benefits lesson later.
Dietary preferences and restrictions
Volunteers should communicate dietary preferences or restrictions clearly and early.
Volunteers are expected to:
- mark vegetarian preference if that applies
- communicate any important dietary restriction in advance
- understand that volunteer meals follow the staff meal system, not a custom menu system
The source agreements specifically mention vegetarian designation, but not a broader dietary accommodation framework.
Respect for the kitchen operation
The volunteer meal system only works if volunteers follow the process consistently.
This means:
- signing up on time
- not skipping the process
- collecting food during the proper time
- not creating unnecessary last-minute changes
- understanding that the kitchen is preparing for a group, not individual ad hoc requests
Summary
In simple terms:
- volunteers receive 1 meal per day
- meals must be signed up for in advance
- vegetarian preference should be marked clearly
- meals must be picked up during the designated time window
- missed meals may be forfeited
- workdays and off days both include the meal benefit
